The Challenge: Brownfield Approach
As part of the NextGen ERP project, Evonik Industries has transitioned their SAP systems to S/4HANA in order to be able to use the new S/4HANA functionalities and to ensure maintainability and central support. In the area of ​​occupational safety, Evonik Industries has a team at its Marl location that measures and assesses hazardous substances in the air at the workplace. As an IT system for mapping workplace measurements, assessing and documenting measurement results as well as managing the employee exposure database, Evonik Industries used the EHS sub-module IHS, which was transferred by SI PRO to the corresponding SAP S/4HANA Health and Safety Management solution. For this purpose, SI PRO developed and implemented a migration concept in order to be able to continue to use existing master data, summarizes André Thebing, IT Project & Portfolio Manager of Evonik Industries AG.

The solution: SAP S/4HANA Health and Safety Management
In general, the new S/4HANA occupational health and safety solution offers a user-friendly, web-based interface by implementing occupational health and safety processes using Fiori apps. Evonik Industries took advantage of this opportunity: SAP S/4HANA Health and Safety Management was introduced together with SI PRO for occupational safety, thereby optimizing occupational safety processes. The embedded content for regulatory lists with occupational exposure limit values ​​for hazardous substances that is already included in the SAP standard allows the manual maintenance effort to be significantly reduced. Furthermore, the hazardous substance inventories that were newly included in the SAP standard could be used to integrate them into the measurement reports.

Optimization of occupational safety processes
With the help of developments based on the SAP standard, additional input fields were created in the Fiori apps so that all data points relevant to occupational safety could be completely recorded and processed in SAP. In the next step, the additional data fields were integrated into the reports to be created (e.g. measurement reports or employee exposure reports). This means that they can fully automatized be filled with the recorded data, without the need for manual post-processing. By implementing a versioning and sign-off concept, the subsequent processes were also successfully mapped into SAP.
